From the year 1944, Bengali Honours Course was introduced in Bangabasi College in tune with the then prevalent nationalist movement for independence. This is perhaps the only department which has a very rich past among all the departments of this college. The prominence of this department comes into forefront because of the activities of our students in past, as well as in the present. In that sense we are perhaps the only department of this college along with English where the division of Arts, Science or Commerce makes no difference, as everyone who speaks Bengali/Hindi has to take it up as a part of the curricula. The enthusiasm of students is notable when early morning Bengali language classes are full and vibrant with students of all other streams. The department as it stands today inherits a rich past. Eminent writers like Dr. Jagadish Bhattacharya, Sadhan Kumar Bhattacharya, Shyamapada Chakraborty constituted the faculty whereas Dr. Pabitra Sarkar (former VC, Rabindra Bharati University) is one of the noted alumni.
