Best Practice-1

1.Title of the Best Practice: Green Initiatives and Environment-Friendly Campus

2.Objectives of the Practice: Green campus initiatives and adopting green practices are integral part of the present-day education system. Our College actively supports the green campus program to support a sustainable and climate-friendly environment. The main objectives are:

1)To promote alternative measures of energy

2)To ensure proper waste, water and energy management

3)To avoid use of plastic within the campus.

3.The Context:

The context that required the initiation of green practices is mainly Global Warming, Climate Change, increasing pollution, reducing resources and lack of awareness regarding environmental challenges. We decided to maintain green space amid the urban metropolis and adopt green practices to propagate sustainability.

4.The Practice:

Green campus sub-committee members of our College (including Faculty and Green campus volunteer students) have participated in variety of activities to help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources. Our college is smoke-free and is also a single-use plastic-free campus. Our college promotes digitalisation and has a partially paperless office and e-library. The college has installed solar panels on the roof which generate solar energy and installed LED lights in all the classrooms.Rainwater harvesting system has been constructed at main campus.

Our College campus has scanty open spaces. So, green space has been increased through vertical gardening. Students learn about Medicinal plants, which are planted in the campus and Mushroom cultivation(included in the B.Sc. Botany syllabus). has been installed in the Campus. Students are also trained to produce Vermicompost, a Green Manure with many benefits.

The College has Undertaken Green Audit, Energy Audit and Environment Audit for sessions, 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 and is planning to continue the assessment.

5. Evidence of Success:

Green campus volunteers and other students take responsibility for switching off lights and fans when not in use and adding water to plants during free time. Through plantation, Conferences, quiz, rallies and seminars, students and others are made aware of the various environmental issues. Large number of students, Faculty, research scholars from colleges participated in the International Conference organized by our College which is appreciable. The waste disposal management initiative taken by our college is yielding very good results.

Through periodical tree plantations, flora and fauna on the campus have been enriched, resulting in the transformation of the campus into an eco-friendly one. An awareness campaign for the plastic-free campus through display boards has made the campus overall plastic-free.By installing solar panels, the College saves on the monthly electricity bill. The Rainwater harvesting unit in the backyard of the College is helping in the conservation of water. Students get to see and learn about medicinal plants of our campus. Special attraction by the students has also been found towards Mushroom cultivation and Vermicomposting, which may help them in future for the development of their entrepreneurship skills.

6.Problems encountered and Resources required

Adopting green practices needs investment, more awareness programs and also a strong desire and participation from all the beneficiaries.
