Library At a glance

Genesis :

Library is not only a store house of knowledge but also a centre of dissemination of the same. Though Bangabasi College was established in the year 1887.In its early stage the college could not make adequate arrangement for a library . But in 1918 the college library was shifted to a spacious room. With passage of time the library grew to the present stage.

Infrastructure

Bangabasi College library system consist of Central Library & Departmental Libraries (along with Zoology PG).The College Library is situated in the first floor of the main building of the College, adjacent to the Principal room. About 3000 Sq.ft. is the total carpet area of the central Library ‘However this is shared by two other colleges also’. The reading room of the college library is named after the great freedom fighter MartyrJatinDas,who happened to be an alumnus of this college. The reading room has a seating capacity of approximately 50 students. There is also a carrel for the teachers. The Library is equipped with ICT facilities like Desktops, Laptops, Printers, Scanners, Wi-Fi, Reprographic machine, CC camera surveillance, Barcoding, ILMS(KOHA).

Management

The Library is managed and financed by Bangabasi College as per the recommendation of Library Sub-Committee. Apart from the  Library grant  sanctioned by UGC and State Government, the college allocates  regularly a substantial budget for enriching the library collection and academic resources.   Library Sub-Committee is headed by Principal with Librarian as Convener and Teachers as Members, who monitor the functioning of the Library periodically.

Collection

                Books :

College Library is primarily meant for “Books” – B (Built in) O (Orderly) O ( Organized) K(Knowledge).Library has collection of  28,653 books (as on 31st March 2020 Audit Report).725 books added up to 31/03/2024 and total number of books is now 29,378  on various subjects offered by the college along with books on religion, biography, different types of dictionary, encyclopaedia etc. and some very rare books.

43 Tittles of Oxford University Press.

            CDs :

63 CDs as accompanying material.

            Periodicals:

Library is currently subscribing two printed Magazines

1  Bengali Magazine – 'JnanBichitra'

2 English Magazine – ‘The Week’

There are also back volumes of ‘Journal of Indian Chemical Society’, ‘Science and Culture’ and  NISCAIR Journals like ‘Resonance’, ‘Current Science' etc.

            Newspapers:

         5 (five) newspapers in English, Bengali& Hindi are distributed to different locations for students, teachers and office staff.

            E-Resources:

1.Membership in NLIST-INFLIBNET service which offer access to more than 97,000 e-books and 6,000 e-journals to students and faculty.

2.The library subscribes to Learning Management System (Eshikshak), contributing significantly to the colleges digital resource pool.

Circulation

Teachers, non-teaching staff and students of Bangabasi College are members of this Library. They can use both the lending and reference sections. Others may use the reference section by permission of authority only.

Inter-Library loan facility among Bangabasi Group of Colleges is available on a limited scale for teachers and staff.

Library Software

Library is partially automated using ILMS KOHA Software. Recently the software has been upgraded to version 23.05 and the catalogue data has been cloud hosted with barcoding. Bibliographic information relating to 17,392 books have already been incorporated in the database.

1.Lecture on “Career Opportunities in Energy Sector & Future of Energy” organized by library and IQAC Bangabasi College on 10th Sep.2022. Speech by Mr.GoutamBiswas, TechnologyDirector, Chevron Lummus Global, USA.

           (Inspired by the rich heritage of our college Mr. Goutam Biswas donated Rs.1,00000/-only for college and library development.)

2.Book exhibition cum sale organized by Bangabasi College Library and Ratna Prakashan, Kolkata on 26.04.2023 and 27.04.2023 in the Reading Room.

On-Going Projects

1.The work of data entry of old books using KOHA is continuing along with newly accessioned books.

2. Digitization and archiving of college publications  for institutional repository.

Future Planning

1.New stack area.

2.Automation of circulation section.

3.Binding of back volumes of journals.
