About

The Department of English was founded in 1934 when the nation as well as the world was in the tremor of the First World War. Eminent teachers such as Prof. Rajkumar Chakraborty have enriched the department by nurturing generations of students. It was said that even students from other colleges gathered to attend his lectures. The illustrious alumni of this Department include teachers in many educational institutions. The department is supported by a committed team of teachers who aim at effectively delivering a course in English, which is renowned for uniformly maintaining its standards of academic excellence over the years. The quality of students in the undergraduate programme is commendable. Students of the department continue to shine in diverse professional fields such as academics, banking, journalism and administration.

  • Apart from the conventional lecture method, the department encourages the learning of students through presentation of short seminar papers, group discussions in presence of
    teachers, question answer sessions etc.
  • The teachers keep an eye on each student’s weakness and strength in respect of the preparation of University examination. Remedial classes are held if required.
  • The students also keep constant touch with the department after graduation, even after post-graduation for personal and academic counselling.
  • The Department runs a seminar Library for its (B.A. Hons.) students.
  • Departmental seminars and debates, attending lectures of various resource persons etc. helps the students to develop a perspective which they would not have attained otherwise.
