About

The department of Political Science is a part of the glorious heritage of Bangabasi College since its establishment in 1957. Set up in an era of post-independence socio-political turmoil, it has come a long way to impart excellent quality of teaching to the students as decades went by. As a community of students and competent faculty members, the department is committed to academic freedom and equal access to education. The department of Political Science is adequately staffed with highly competent faculty, quite well known in the academic-socio-political circuit through electronic media, research interests and international level awards. The competency of the faculty is also proved every year by virtue of the results of the students who are well placed in educational institutions and other professional fields.

Teaching Learning

The Department of Political Science is engaged in teaching at the undergraduate level. At present the faculty takes classes based on syllabus framed according to CBCS and NEP Curriculum. The focus is on both Honours and General Courses with special emphasis on Interdisciplinary Courses (IDC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC).

Capacity Building

The Department offers three Add-on Certificate Course to all major/minor students  of Political Science. The Courses are- (a) Understanding Gender: Impact and Role in the Society  (b) Constitutional Values: The Constitution of India (c) Introducing Human Rights: Historical Trajectories and Developmental Perspectives. The duration is 30 hours and student capacity is 25 for each course.

Academic Activities

  • Department of Political Science, Bangabasi College organized a day Workshop on 28th May 2018. The topic of Discussion was CBCS - Political Science Syllabus in collaboration with the UG Board of Studies in Political Science. The programme was chaired by the then principal Dr. Subrata Sankar Bagchi. 
  • The Department organized a seminar on 27th August 2019 to enlighten the students on “Democratic Awareness through Legal Literacy”.The department invited the eminent lawyer of the Calcutta High Court Shri Jayantanarayan Chatterjee as the guest speaker of the seminar.
  • The Department organized an one-day national webinar on 20th December 2021 on the topic “Rastra, Jonogon, Gonotontro: Rashtrabigyan charchar bishaybostu”.  The Department invited eminent professor Dr. Dwaipayan Bhattacharya as the speaker of the webinar.
  • The Department organized One-day Seminar Lecture on 7th April 20022 on the topic : Russia- Ukraine war and present global scenario. The eminent speakers of the Seminar were Dr. Debasish Majumder and Dr. Imankalyan Lahiri.

Research

  • Dr Lopamudra Sengupta, Head of the Department of Political Science has been actively pursuing research on Human Rights and Gender Studies in context of South Asia.
  • She has been working with Human Rights of the Third Gender in India for the last two decades and has presented her research papers in National and International seminars.
  • In 2018 she received full travel grant from University Grant's Commission ( UGC) for presenting her paper in Toronto, Canada.
  • In 2019 she obtained Shastri Publication Grant from Shastri Indo Canadian Institute ( SICI), New Delhi.
  • In 2023 her monograph on Human Rights of the Third Gender in India has been published from Routledge, London.
  • She is presently the Project Director of the Major Research Project on Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development in West Bengal funded by Indian Council for Social Science Research & Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi.

Facilities

  • The Department organizes state and national and level seminars and conferences in collaboration with other academic organizations.
  • The department has a well-stocked library which contains text and reference books regularly required for students, both in English and Bengali for the benefit of students .
  • Remedial classes are held for students so that they perform well in final exams.
