Laboratories

  1. Physics Laboratory: The Department of Physics, in the ground floor of the College, boasts of a recently overhauled and renovated, fully equipped, Wi-Fi and ICT enabled Laboratory with modern equipment and apparatus, catering to both Honours & General Course students. Every time during the College hours, the laboratory is full of enthusiastic groups of students, working on the different experimental set-ups/apparatus to increase their practical skills and also to verify the different laws/principles of Physics which they encounter in their textbooks. They are always under the supervision of the faculty and are helped by the Laboratory staff. Maintaining the log books, regular recording of data and getting the practical notebooks signed is mandatory. Updated Laboratory Manuals are there in order to help students to maintain their Lab-Records. Students are provided with individual Electronics Kits for practice, one for each group. To keep up with the enthusiasm of learning Physics, different portions of the Physics Laboratory have nomenclatures in rhythm with different physical constants like 'G' (Universal Gravitational Constant), (pi), 'kB' (Boltzmann Constant), 'c' (velocity of light), (fine structure constant) ' ' (reduced Planck's constant), 'e-' (electronic charge), 'Byte' etc. Along with classical apparatus, advanced measuring equipment like balances, spectrometers, galvanometers, travelling microscopes, analog and digital meters like CRO and energy sources as high tension discharge tubes, function generators etc., the Physics Laboratory houses a number of dual boot (Linux & Windows) desktop/laptop computers connected via LAN to a common server.
  2. Chemistry Laboratory: Teaching of Chemistry is undoubtedly incomplete without practical classes, and the Chemistry department in the ground floor of the College is proud to maintain well equipped laboratories for the students. To address the needs of each specialization, the first floor of the College houses one laboratory for Physical Chemistry. Labs for Inorganic and Organic Chemistry is located on the ground floor itself. Separate laboratories are housed in the ground floor for students of other streams who take up chemistry as a subsidiary subject. A dedicated store room in the first floor caters to the needs of all the running chemistry labs.
  3. Mathematics Laboratory: In this new era, the computer knowledge, especially programming, is essential for students of Mathematics. Math Lab is essential to solve complex computational problems. Our College provides a separate space for mathematics lab and it is well equipped in strength to provide a separate laptop to most of the students.
  4. Computer Science Laboratory: The laboratory of the Department of Computer Science comprises of a fully air-conditioned internet enabled software lab which houses fourteen desktops connected through LAN. The PCs are set up to allow dual-boot Windows and Linux. They are always kept updated with the latest software to cater to the needs of the students. The Department also has a state-of-art hardware electronics laboratory. It focusses on training the students in both analog and digital design. The laboratory set-up also supports taking practical classes with microprocessor training kits.
  5. Geography Laboratory: The Geography department has a well-equipped laboratory where students get a first-hand experience of the instruments and methods to conduct activities like field surveys. Keeping pace with the use of computers and technology in modern times, the laboratory has a dedicated computer lab with latest software to comply with Calcutta University curriculum.
  6. Psychology Laboratory: The Psychology laboratory of Bangabasi College attempts to address specific needs of undergraduate students of both Honours and General course of Psychology. The laboratory includes a vast spacious area, well illuminated and ventilated room, available for a large number of students to collect data from human participants which is also an essential part of their curriculum. The major equipment like Suman responsescope, apparent timer, kymograph, aesthesiometer etc. as well as large collection of various psychological tests, paper pencil test, batteries are available and stored safely and are maintained periodically. All these keep our students happy & content.
  7. Anthropology Laboratory: The Anthropological laboratory of Bangabasi College is extremely well-equipped for covering the undergraduate Honours and General syllabi. For taking measurements, there are sufficient number ofinstruments like Martin's spreading callipers, Martin's sliding callipers, Martin's anthropometers, Harpenden skinfold calliper, weighing machine, sphygmomanometer etc. to conduct the practical classes of Anthropometry. There are equipments like centrifuge to determine the ABO blood groups.Besides ABO blood group, colour blindness, phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) tasting abilityas well as dermatoglyphic tests are also done in the laboratory, as per the syllabus. Moreover, the laboratory has adequate number of human skulls, individual bones and articulated full human skeleton. There are casts of fossil primates like Australopithecus africanus skull, calottes of Sinanthropuspekinensis and Pithecanthropus erectus; casts of La-Chapelle-Aux-Saints and Cromagnon crania; a cast of Dryopithecusmandible; and a stuffed specimen of a prosimian (lower primate). Among the living primates, there is an original skull of gibbon, and casts of gorilla, chimpanzee and orang-utan. In the context of social cultural anthropology, there are models of different kinds of fishing traps and nets, ploughs and hoes, used in different environmental settings. There is also a model of a husking lever. For ethnographic field-work, there are audio-visual facilities. Furthermore, regarding archaeological anthropology, there are sufficient numbers of original specimens of lower, middle, upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic tools from India. In addition, casts of European stone and bone tools, like leaf points, harpoons, awls, baton-de-commandment etc. are also present. Numerous potsherds of different cultural periods necessary for students' practical classes are present in laboratory in sufficient numbers. Besides these, we also have modern equipments like GPS, Clinometers, Brunton's compass, toposheets and other implements for excavation and exploration.
  8. Botany Laboratory: The Department of Botany possesses two laboratories for Honours students and three shared laboratories for General students. They are well maintained and airy with ample light and equipped with modern instruments. Some of the instruments include Laminar air flow, hot air oven, Incubator, Compound and simple microscopes with occular, stage micrometer and camera lucida for magnification. Other experiments used for practical classes are Autoclave, Digital balance, Centrifuge, Colorimeter etc. All the instruments and the infrastructure of the Laboratory ensure the students for smooth learning process of their practical curriculum.
  9. Zoology Laboratory: The Department of Zoology has four laboratories. Two of them are used for undergraduate courses, both for Honours and general courses. The laboratories are well equipped, well lighted with good ventilation. Rooms are spacious as it houses more number of students. Laboratory facilities include space for Teachers' demonstration, display of equipments, charts, models and safe storage places for glass goods and chemicals. There a specialized laboratories exclusively used for Post graduate courses, which is used for the purpose of anatomical studies, equipped with dissecting trays, binocular microscopes, simple monocular microscopes, charts, models etc. The said room too is well lighted and with good water supply. Beside this there are four diversified laboratories for four Elective papers of PG course with research facilities both for students and faculties. The Department has its credit a DST-FIST sponsored sophisticated air- conditioned instrumentation laboratory equipped with UV-Spectrophotometer, Thermocycler, Horizontal and Vertical Gel apparatus, Trans blot apparatus, Transilluminator, ELISA reader, Gel rocker, Centrifuge machine, Trinocular microscope with computer attachment, Vortexer, -20 freezer, BOD incubator, Microtome machineHot plate, Colorimeter, PH Meter, Water Bath etc. Students get hands on experience in this laboratory for tool based practical courses on Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Endocrinology and Molecular Parasitology and ecology.
  10. Commerce IT Laboratory: Industries prefer commerce graduates because of conceptual and theoretical knowledge of business which is useful to the organisational activities. Recruitment of such commerce degree candidates reduces the cost of training. To make it more attractive and practice-oriented, Commerce Department of Bangabasi College had started a Commerce IT Laboratory with about 30 desktop computers and other supporting infrastructural facilities. Today, all professional educational courses are in huge demand since without application of theoretical knowledge,the learning becomes meaningless in today's dynamic environment. In that laboratory, other than regular classes and practical exams, course on Tally.ERP9 for the students and faculty development programmes are also conducted. Internet facility is available in the laboratory and all required softwares are provided to the students.
