About

One of the oldest Departments in Bangabasi College, the Department of Anthropology has a glorious history since 1936, when it was offered as a subject in the Intermediate Course.  Degree General Course commenced from 1950 and Honours Course was offered since 1978.  The department is the pioneer one under the University of Calcutta achieving the glory of running the Honours course successfully over the decades and boasts of an illustrious alumni, well placed in various schools/colleges/universities over the country as well as abroad. Anthropological Survey of India, Cultural Research Institute, Indian Statistical Institute, Indian Institute of Management and other Government bodies are marked with the presence of the alumni of this department. Some are engaged in media also. Most of the years, the students of this department ranked first /second in the University final examination.

Facilities

  • Every year about 30-35 students get the opportunity for studying three-year Anthroplogy Honours degree course and more than 75 students get admission for general course with Anthropology as one of their subsidiary subjects.
  • The overall performance of the students in academics as well as extra-curricular activities is excellent.
  • At present the department has a common laboratory for both Honours and general students.
  • Besides the tight schedule of holding theoretical and practical classes, the department performs several activities like publication of wall magazine reflecting the current trends in Anthroplogy as well as the thinking of the students, taking part in Students' Fair, arranging Departmental seminars,
  • Regular interaction with the ex-students of the Department who have made a mark in Anthropology Research in National as well as in International arena.
  • Regular assessment of students is done through class tests, evaluation and parent teacher meetings.
  • The department organizes seminar lectures delivered by eminent anthropologists.
  • Following University curriculum, the department arranges field work for the students of Honours and General streams every year.

Tourism, Heritage Management and Anthropology (32 hours duration) : From the session 2021-22 with a intake capacity of 25 students.
